From a Norman village near Dieppe to the name I sign my work with — the short version of a very long story.

911 — NORMANDY

Vikings — "Northmen" — settle the region that takes their name. The family springs from Osonvilla, near Dieppe: D'Oson, "from Oson".

1066 — ENGLAND

The name crosses with the Norman Conquest. The family seats at Acornbank, Westmorland; Sawil D'Oson witnesses a charter for Hurley Priory.

15TH C. — BRANCHES

First records at North Bierley in Yorkshire's West Riding; seats at Langcliffe Hall and beyond. Branches reach Scotland by 1466, and later Castle Dawson in Ireland.
